St. Dismas is remembered in the Gospel as the "Good Thief," the criminal crucified beside Jesus on Calvary. In his final moments, he performed one of the most powerful acts of faith recorded in Scripture. While the other thief mocked Christ, Dismas rebuked him, acknowledged his own guilt, and professed his belief in Jesus' innocence and kingship.
Turning to Christ, he humbly pleaded, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." In response, Jesus gave him a promise that has echoed through the centuries: "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:42–43).
Though little is known about his life, Dismas is honored as a profound witness to God's mercy. In a single moment of repentance and trust, he received forgiveness and salvation, becoming a powerful reminder that it is never too late to turn to Christ.
Later Christian tradition gave him the name Dismas and reflected on his encounter with the Holy Family, though these stories are not part of the biblical record. What remains certain is his place in salvation history as the first saint canonized by Christ Himself.
St. Dismas' feast day is celebrated on March 25, inviting the faithful to reflect on repentance, humility, and the boundless mercy of God.
