Founder and advisor to Pope Benedict IX. A Greek, Bartholomew was born in Rossano, Italy, where he became a disciple of St. Nitus, the founder of the Greek abbey of Grottaferata, near Rome. He became an abbot there and completed the structure, turning it into a center of learning. Thus he earned a reputation as the second founder of the institution. He rebuked Pope Benedict IX, convincing him to reform his life. He is also credited with several liturgical hymns.
