Forty Jesuit martyrs. Spanish and Portuguese by descent, they set sail for the West Indies to work as missionaries when they fell into the hands of a Huguenot captain, Jacques Sourie, who put them to death near the Canary Islands. Ignatius, the superior of the band, was a native of Coimbra. They were all beatified in 1854.
